Session Description: Insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, and diabetes are at record numbers in the United States. These are the major causes of disease, aging and death in the developed world as well as much of the developing world. There are several steps in order to effectively diagnose, treat and possible reverse this continuum that must be addressed. First, the mechanism of the root cause/s of insulin resistance must be established. Second, we must understand the pathophysiology of insulin resistance, its stages, its potential antecedents, triggers and mediators, along with clarification of the relationship between the continuum of insulin resistance and disease. Third, we must develop appropriate treatment strategies that address the root causes and the changes in physiology that have ensued. In this presentation, we will utilize a systems-biology approach aimed at providing tools to comprehensively assess, treat and effectively support the reversal of insulin resistance.
