The Mindful Genogram: The Examination of Ancestral Bias

Participants will be guided in the mindful examination of generational family history to identify patterns of racism. Participants will create their family genograms during the workshop, expertly led by Drs. Carol Penn and Kathy Farah, Senior Faculty for Center of Mind Body Medicine. Both Dr. Penn and Farah work with acute and historical trauma. Their different racial and cultural backgrounds create a rich framework and visual tapestry for participants to explore racism.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify patterns of racism, bias, and white supremacy through a mindful examination of generational family history.
  2. Explain the implications of generational trauma and racism in healthcare and within the therapeutic relationship.
  3. Recognize the role that the unconscious bias can play in both the provisions and receipt of healthcare using mindfulness-based approach to genograms and trauma.
