Plenary: Gut Microbiome and Pre-Autoimmune Diseases – Functional Immunology in Clinical Practice

Feb 17 2024

3:45 PM - 4:45 PM EDT

Grand Ballroom East

“We are witnessing the explosion in prevalence of what has been termed in the medical literature as “pre-autoimmune disease”. There are many variations of this condition in term of symptom type, severity and duration of the condition. Over the past decade an understanding of the cellular biology of this complex array of conditions has started to emerge leading to new Functional Medicine approaches to their assessment and management focused on immune imbalances and their connection to genetic, lifestyle, environment and dietary factors. This presentation will review the role that the intestinal microbiome plays in these conditions and how this results in the development of a personalized patient management program for the immunological imbalances associated with pre-autoimmune diseases.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the signs and symptoms associated with pre-autoimmune disease.
  2. Recognize the assessment tools that are valuable in defining pre-autoimmune disease.
  3. Recognize the specific nutritional variables that relate to pre-autoimmune diseases.
  4. Develop an understanding of the immunological disturbances associated with pre-autoimmune disease from a Functional Nutrition perspective.
