Plenary: PFASs: Clinical Impacts, Diagnosis and Intervention

Feb 16 2024

3:30 PM - 5:00 PM EDT

Grand Ballroom East

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals with multiple fluorine atoms. They are widely distributed in drinking water, food, food packaging materials and many other regularly used products These “Forever chemicals” have half-lives in humans measured in years and have been shown to contribute significantly to the chronic disease epidemic. Clinical research on body load of PFASs has shown a dose-dependent relationship with many physiological dysfunctions and diseases such as several cancers, ovarian dysfunction, infertility, insulin resistance, diabetes II, thyroid dysfunction, liver damage, kidney damage, asthma, the list is long. This presentation summarizes the latest research on the contribution of PFASs to dysfunction and disease, reviews methods for assessment of body load and focuses especially on mechanisms of detoxification and optimal methods for decreasing body load.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the contribution of PFASs to disease and dysfunction.
  2. Assess the body load of PFASs accurately.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in helping decrease body load of PFASs safely and effectively.
