Microglial Reprogramming – A New Paradigm in Treating Neurodegenerative Disorders

Feb 20 2025

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM EDT

Grand Ballroom East

Among the chronic degenerative disorders affecting the globe, those affecting the brain are perhaps the most consequential. And despite decades and billions of dollars dedicated to research, we still find ourselves at a loss when challenged to respond to these conditions. But there is hope on the horizon. New research recognizes the fundamental roles of brain microglial cells as either nurturing and supporting neurons and synapses, or adopting a phenotypic change that threatens neurons, fosters accumulation of beta-amyloid, and destabilizes synapses. This presentation explores the emerging science of microglial reprogramming, reverting microglia back to their supportive phenotype and its clinical implications through the lens of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Session Learning Objectives:

1.) Better understand the science of immunometabolism, specifically as it relates to microglial cell phenotypic expression.
2.) Recognize how lifestyle choices targeting metabolism can bring about microglial reprogramming.
3.) Understand why GLP-1 agonist intervention may hold promise in neurodegenerative disorders.
