Inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis are increasing rapidly and are expected to affect 1% of the world’s population within the next ten years. Conventional therapies focus on immune suppression, but only achieve remission in less than 50% of cases with high rates of recurrence and significant side effects. This presentation will present evidence supporting an integrative, systems biology approach to IBD with an emphasis on strategies for improving the gut microbiome, along with anti-inflammatory foods, nutraceuticals, and botanicals. Case studies will be included.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review the molecular pathophysiology and genomics of IBD, with comparisons and contrasts between CD and UC
  2. Explore gut microbial signatures found on fecal DNA sequencing in people with IBD
  3. Discuss potential dietary, nutritional, and botanical interventions for IBD based on a personalized, integrative, systems biology approach
