The Impact of Lyme Disease in PANS and PANDAS: A Naturopathic Approach to Immune Dysfunction and Recovery

Feb 20 2025

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM EDT

Murray Hill

The prevalence and impact of Lyme disease in Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) is gaining attention due to its significant contribution to immune dysfunction and the exacerbation of these disorders. PANS and PANDAS are characterized by the sudden onset of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, tics, and other severe neuropsychiatric symptoms. Emerging evidence suggests that Lyme disease is notably prevalent among patients with PANS and PANDAS, playing a crucial role in their immune dysregulation and the progression of these conditions.

This presentation aims to explore the prevalence of Lyme disease in PANS and PANDAS, elucidating the mechanisms of Lyme-induced immune dysfunction and its impact on neurological health. A comprehensive review of recent studies will be conducted to detail these mechanisms and their contributions to the onset and progression of PANS and PANDAS. The discussion will extend to the therapeutic potential of naturopathic and herbal medicine in treating underlying infections and restoring immune balance. Emphasis will be placed on lifestyle interventions, naturopathic treatments, and specific herbal medicines, highlighting their roles in addressing root causes and healing the physiological terrain of patients.

Preliminary findings indicate a high prevalence of Lyme disease in PANS and PANDAS patients, with significant immune dysregulation observed in these individuals’ conditions. Naturopathic approaches, including lifestyle modifications and herbal medicine, have shown promise in reducing symptom severity and promoting recovery by targeting the underlying infections and restoring immune function. Understanding the interplay between Lyme disease and immune dysfunction in PANS and PANDAS is crucial for developing effective treatment strategies. Naturopathic and herbal medicine offer valuable tools in addressing these complex neuropsychiatric conditions by resolving underlying infections and restoring immune balance. Further research is warranted to refine these approaches and optimize patient outcomes.

Session Learning Objectives:

1.) Understand the pathophysiology of immune dysfunction in Lyme disease, as well as PANS/PANDAS.

2.) Understand how to properly investigate the patient’s terrain to see what additional underlying causes of immune dysfunction have been created by the infection(s) and need to be corrected.

3.) Create an individualized treatment plan that includes lifestyle, naturopathic, and herbal medicine to resolve the underlying infections and restore immune competence.
